Trademark Registration in Cyprus: Fees & 2027 Guide 🇨🇾
Trademark registration in Cyprus starts with an application to the Intellectual Property Section of the Department of Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property. Apply to the Intellectual Property Section of the Department of Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property, identify the mark and its goods or services using the Nice Classification, and pay the official filing fee. Current guidance lists €129 for electronic filing in one class and €94 for each additional class. Confirm fees and procedure before filing.
This guide explains Cyprus national trademark registration, application preparation, official fees, examination and when an EU trade mark may fit better. It is general information, not legal advice or a promise of registration or funding.
🇨🇾 Prepare for SME FUND 2027
The future scheme has not opened and its terms are unconfirmed. If a future call includes eligible trademark costs, qualifying EU SMEs may be able to seek reimbursement. This is conditional; no 75% refund or grant is guaranteed.
What does a national trademark in Cyprus protect?

A national registration protects a sign in the Republic of Cyprus for the goods and services in the register. It does not automatically cover the rest of the EU. A Cyprus application may suit a business focused on that market; businesses trading across the EU should compare it with an EU trade mark. Before filing, decide whether to protect a word, logo or combined sign, who should own it, and which products or services it will identify. A company name, domain or social account is not a substitute for trademark registration. Review our pre-filing trademark checklist and risk assessment guide.
🇨🇾 How to register a trademark in Cyprus
1. Search for earlier rights
Search the exact wording and likely variants, including similar spelling, sound, meaning and logo elements. Check Cyprus records and relevant EU and international registrations that may have effect there. A search is a risk-screening step, not a guarantee of availability. The official TMview search service helps locate records from participating offices.
2. Choose the mark and owner
Consider whether you need a word mark, figurative/logo mark or another accepted sign. A word mark protects wording independently of one graphic style; a logo application protects the representation filed. Consider future rebranding, licensing, investment and ownership changes. The applicant should be the person or entity that will genuinely own and control the rights.
3. Specify goods and services
Describe the products and services the mark will identify and classify them under the Nice Classification. A class number alone is not an adequate specification. Avoid vague or unnecessarily broad wording. The WIPO Nice Classification is a reference for class research; follow the Cyprus office’s current instructions for the final wording.
4. Submit the national application
The Cyprus authority provides a national application form and an electronic filing route. The application generally identifies the applicant, represents the mark, lists the goods and services, and includes any priority claim and supporting documents. Provide a clear representation for a logo. Follow official language and form requirements. Read the Cyprus national trademark filing guidance and the Gov.cy trademark service page.
5. Pay the fee and monitor notices
Current guidance lists €129 for online filing of a standard national application in one class, plus €94 for each additional class. Hand or postal filing is listed at €141 for the first class and €102 for each additional class. Fees for certification or collective marks differ. Check the authority’s live instructions immediately before submission and monitor official correspondence.
6. Examination, publication and objections
The authority checks formal requirements and examines registrability, including distinctiveness and relevant earlier rights. If the application proceeds, the decision is published in the Official Gazette. Official guidance gives a three-month period for objections after publication of the registration decision. An office objection or third-party challenge may require a formal response. Processing times depend on the application and issues raised.
7. Maintain the registration
Trademark protection is time-limited and must be renewed under applicable rules. Keep owner contact details current, record assignments and licences, monitor deadlines and retain evidence of use. Store the certificate and filing details with the company’s key records.
🇨🇾 Cyprus trademark fees vs 🇪🇺 EUIPO fees
This table compares one-class electronic filing in Cyprus with EUIPO’s basic online fee for one EU class. Cyprus charges €94 for each additional class. EUIPO charges €50 for class two and €150 for each class after that.
| Comparison (1 class) | 🇨🇾 Cyprus national mark | 🇪🇺 EU trade mark |
|---|---|---|
| Official electronic filing fee | €129 | €850 |
| Hypothetical 75% eligible-fee scenario | €32.25 remaining | €212.50 remaining |
| Territory | Cyprus | All EU Member States as one unitary right |
| Additional class fee | €94 per additional class online | €50 for class 2; €150 per class after |
Funding note: the 75% arithmetic is illustrative only. SME FUND 2027 terms are not confirmed; any reimbursement depends on future published rules, eligibility, eligible fees, caps, timing, availability and approval. Figures exclude professional fees and other costs. See EUIPO’s official SME Fund information and EUIPO’s current fee schedule.

🇨🇾 Cyprus national trademark or 🇪🇺 EU trade mark?
A national application may fit a brand whose activity and enforcement needs are mainly in Cyprus. An EU trade mark gives a single route across all EU Member States, but is unitary: an earlier conflict in one part of the EU may affect the application as a whole. Compare customers, distributors, advertising and realistic expansion plans. Our Croatia vs EU trademark comparison shows the same territorial choice; our EU and Estonia trademark service page describes related support.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming Cyprus registration covers the whole EU.
- Skipping searches across national, EU and international records.
- Choosing Nice classes without a precise goods/services list.
- Filing in a founder’s name when the company should own the brand.
- Submitting an unclear or inconsistent logo representation.
- Overlooking official correspondence, publication and objection deadlines.
- Assuming SME FUND 2027 has opened or guarantees a refund.
