Trademark Registration in Bulgaria: Fees & 2027 Guide πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬

Trademark registration in Bulgaria starts with filing an application with the Patent Office of the Republic of Bulgaria. File with the Patent Office of the Republic of Bulgaria, specify the mark and its goods and services under the Nice Classification, and pay the application and examination fee. The Office currently lists BGN 520 (€265.87) for up to three classes; a separate BGN 50 (€25.56) certificate fee is due after approval. Check the tariff in force before filing.

This guide explains Bulgaria’s national trademark process, current state fees, the difference between national and EU protection, and what to prepare before applying. It is general information, not legal advice or a guarantee of registration or funding.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬ Prepare for SME FUND 2027

If the future call includes eligible trademark costs, an eligible EU SME may seek reimbursement. SME FUND 2027 rules are not yet confirmed; the 75% calculation below is illustrative only and does not guarantee a grant.

What does Bulgarian trademark registration protect?

A Bulgarian national trademark registration protects the mark in Bulgaria for the goods and services listed in the register. It does not automatically cover other EU countries. Decide whether a national filing meets your market plans or whether a unitary EU trade mark is more suitable. Before filing, determine who will own the mark and whether you need to protect a word, logo or combined sign. Review our pre-filing trademark checklist before finalising the application.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬ How to register a trademark in Bulgaria

1. Search earlier rights

Search the exact sign and similar spellings, sounds, meanings and logos. Check Bulgarian records and relevant EU and international marks with effect in Bulgaria. The official TMview search tool helps locate records across participating offices, but a search cannot guarantee acceptance or eliminate dispute risk.

2. Prepare the goods and services list

Choose the Nice classes and describe the goods and services specifically; the class number alone is not enough. The WIPO Nice Classification is a reference for classifying goods and services. An overly broad list can create unnecessary cost and risk, while a narrow one may not cover your real business.

3. File the application

The Patent Office accepts applications through its e-services portal and by the filing methods described in its guidance. The application identifies the applicant, shows the mark and lists the goods and services. Applications are submitted in Bulgarian. Foreign applicants should confirm whether they must act through a Bulgarian industrial property representative. See the Bulgarian Patent Office national trademark guidance and official e-filing portal.

4. Pay and monitor the application

The current published application and examination fee is BGN 520 (€265.87) for up to three classes, plus BGN 30 (€15.34) for each later class. The Office gives a payment deadline after filing; late payment can lead to a higher amount or withdrawal. Confirm details on the official fee tariff before submitting.

5. Examination, publication and opposition

The Office performs formal and substantive examination. If the application proceeds, it is published; the Office’s guidance describes a three-month period after publication for eligible parties to oppose. Respond promptly to official notices and keep your correspondence details current. If registration is approved, a separate BGN 50 (€25.56) certificate fee is payable. The registration lasts ten years from filing and may be renewed for further ten-year periods.

The Bulgarian fee below is the same for one to three classes, so it is not a separate lower one-class tariff. The EUIPO basic online fee covers one class.

Funding note: SME FUND 2027 terms are not published yet. The 75% figures are arithmetic examples, not a promise. Actual eligibility, covered fees, caps, timing and approval depend on the future call. See EUIPO’s official SME Fund information and current EUIPO fees.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡¬ Bulgarian or πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί EU trademark: which should you choose?

A Bulgarian mark may suit a business focused on Bulgaria. An EU trade mark can cover all EU Member States through one unitary right, but conflicts anywhere in the Union can affect the filing. Compare target customers, distribution, advertising and realistic expansion plans. Our Croatia vs EU trademark comparison illustrates the same territorial choice, and our EU and Estonia trademark service page describes related support.

Common filing mistakes

  • Assuming a Bulgarian national mark protects the whole EU.
  • Skipping searches for similar earlier rights.
  • Choosing class numbers without a precise goods and services list.
  • Overlooking the separate certificate fee or payment deadlines.
  • Missing the post-publication opposition period.
  • Assuming SME FUND 2027 is open or guarantees reimbursement.
