SME Fund 2027 for Trademark Support: January Launch?

Could the SME Fund 2027 open in January? It is possible, based on the timing of previous editions, but as of 17 October 2026 the EUIPO has not announced the 2027 call or confirmed a launch date. Businesses planning to register a trade mark should use this as a preparation guide, then verify dates, eligible fees and reimbursement rates in the official 2027 call before relying on any grant.

The Ideas Powered for Business SME Fund is an EU initiative that supports small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) with selected intellectual property costs. Previous editions have included support for trade marks and designs. The SME Fund 2027 programme, its budget, voucher rules and opening date remain subject to an official announcement.

What is the SME Fund?

The SME Fund is a grant scheme supported by the European Commission and implemented by the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO). It provides vouchers that can reimburse part of certain intellectual property costs. Depending on the annual call, support may cover trade marks, designs, patents, IP Scan services or other specified activities. The exact list can change from one edition to the next.

A trade mark helps identify the commercial source of goods or services. It may protect a word mark, logo or other eligible sign, subject to the applicable rules and examination. Before applying, a business should decide who will own the mark, where protection is needed and which goods and services should be covered. A voucher does not guarantee registration, and it does not replace clearance searches or a well-planned filing strategy.

What is the current status of SME Fund 2026?

The 2026 call began on 2 February 2026. EUIPO states that funds for Voucher 1 (IP Scan) and Voucher 2 (trade marks and designs) have been exhausted, so new applications for those voucher categories are unavailable. The published call schedule lists 4 December 2026 as the planned closing date, but the call may close earlier when funds are used. Other voucher categories may have separate availability and should be checked on EUIPO’s official pages.

Therefore, it is more precise to say that the 2026 trade mark and design voucher is unavailable for new applications, rather than saying that the entire SME Fund 2026 has ended. Applicants who already received a voucher should review its validity and reimbursement deadlines. A voucher award and the ability to make a new application are different things.

Could SME Fund 2027 start in January?

A January 2027 launch of the SME Fund 2027 is a hypothesis, not an EUIPO-confirmed date. Previous editions have opened early in the year, which makes January a reasonable month to watch. However, the schedule depends on the official call, budget approval and administrative arrangements. Until EUIPO publishes a 2027 timetable, a business should not describe January as a guaranteed opening date.

The responsible approach is to prepare early while keeping the business plan flexible. Monitor the official EUIPO SME Fund page, and confirm any announcement against the call documents rather than relying on predictions, social posts or old articles.

Can SMEs save 75% on EUIPO trade mark fees in 2027?

Some earlier SME Fund rules have offered reimbursement of up to 75% for eligible trade mark and design fees in specified circumstances. That does not establish that the same rate, cap, countries or fee categories will apply in 2027. EUIPO will set the applicable terms in the next call. The actual amount reimbursed may depend on the type and territory of the filing, the fees paid, the voucher limit, eligibility and remaining funds.

For budgeting, assume first that the company may need to pay the full filing cost itself. Treat a possible voucher as a later reimbursement only after eligibility and the formal award are confirmed. EUIPO’s 2026 call says costs incurred before the grant decision are not retroactively reimbursed under that call; applicants should check the equivalent rule in the 2027 documents.

See the EUIPO preparation checklist for the 2026 call. It requests supporting business and bank information; the 2027 document list may differ.

How to prepare for a possible SME Fund 2027 application

  1. Confirm the applicant. Identify the SME that will apply and whether it will own the trade mark.
  2. Check the SME definition. Use the EU definition and the evidence requested by the call; do not rely only on the company’s label or size estimate.
  3. Choose the filing territory. Consider whether protection is needed in Estonia, other EU countries, across the EU or in additional markets.
  4. Define goods and services. Prepare a focused list that reflects the actual products and services, planned expansion and business model.
  5. Review the name and logo. Search for potentially conflicting marks and consider professional advice before committing to a filing.
  6. Prepare documents. Keep registration or VAT evidence and company bank details current, then compare them with the 2027 application checklist once published.
  7. Wait for the official award before assuming reimbursement. Follow the call’s order of steps and deadlines; avoid assuming that earlier costs will be eligible.

Who may qualify?

Previous SME Fund editions have supported eligible SMEs established in the European Union. The final 2027 criteria are not yet known. In 2026, applicants needed to satisfy the programme’s SME requirements and provide requested documentation. When a representative acted for an applicant, additional authorisation or declarations could be required. Businesses should use the official 2027 call and forms as the definitive checklist.

Being an EU company alone does not automatically guarantee a voucher. Applications can be subject to eligibility checks, available funding, deadlines and a grant decision. The funds may run out before the published closing date, as the 2026 rules expressly allow applications to close early if the budget is exhausted.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Treating the possible January launch as confirmed before EUIPO publishes a timetable.
  • Promising a 75% reimbursement for 2027 before the rate and cap are announced.
  • Assuming that every trade mark, territory or professional service will be eligible.
  • Filing before checking who should own the mark and which goods or services it should cover.
  • Assuming a voucher guarantees trade mark registration or a successful outcome.
  • Waiting until the last moment to prepare documents when a future call may have limited funding.

SME Fund 2027: summary

SME Fund 2027 may open in January, but as of 17 October 2026 that timing is only a hypothesis. EUIPO has not published the 2027 call, eligibility rules, reimbursement rate, voucher caps or application dates. In the 2026 programme, funds for new trade mark and design voucher applications were exhausted, while other voucher categories had separate availability. SMEs can use the waiting period to prepare their trade mark strategy and documents, then verify every detail against the official 2027 call.

Frequently asked questions

Has EUIPO confirmed that SME Fund 2027 opens in January?

No. As of 17 October 2026, the official 2027 call and opening date have not been published. January is discussed here only as a possibility based on previous early-year cycles.

Is SME Fund 2026 completely closed?

Not according to the current EUIPO information. Funds for Voucher 1 and Voucher 2 have been exhausted, which prevents new applications for IP Scan and trade mark/design support under those vouchers. Check the official page for other voucher categories and existing awards.

Will the 2027 SME Fund reimburse 75% of EUIPO fees?

That rate is not confirmed for 2027. Previous schemes have offered up to 75% for eligible costs in certain circumstances. Wait for the next call to confirm the rate, cap, eligible fees and territories.

Can I register a trade mark now and claim the costs later?

Do not assume so. The 2026 call states that costs incurred before the grant decision cannot be reimbursed retroactively. Check the 2027 terms before deciding when to file.

What can my company do while waiting?

Identify the intended owner, review the brand, define the relevant goods and services, choose target territories and keep company documents current. Then compare your situation with the official application requirements when EUIPO announces the next call.

This article is general information, not a grant decision or legal advice. The official EUIPO call and its documents control eligibility, dates, reimbursement rates and application steps.

For the official SME criteria, consult the European Commission SME definition; the 2027 call may specify additional evidence or conditions.
